The research question

The study asks how a high-rise residential envelope could be easier to inspect, maintain and adapt while improving environmental performance and the experience of living in the building.

Balconies as working elements

Biophilic balconies are being explored as more than amenity space. The research considers whether they can also contribute to maintenance access, solar shading and the relationship between residents and the external envelope.

Envelope and servicing

Areas under investigation include building-integrated photovoltaics, central service zones, accessible roof and gutter arrangements, glazing, orientation and low-energy building systems. These are research directions rather than validated design claims.

What is being tested

The work considers practical viability, durability, adaptability and whole-life cost alongside resident and maintenance-team experience. The point is to test how the ideas perform as a joined-up building strategy, not as an isolated feature list.
